And Elevators

Rather than jump into the Rake and Tedder market, RIPC instead advertised “C. B. & Q. side-delivery rakes and tedders, including the regular C. B. & Q. wood-frame rake, the C. B. & Q. steel-frame tedder sidedelivery rake, and the C. B. & Q. twin-cylinder side-delivery rake, heretofore made by the Chambers, Baring & Quinlan Company, at Decatur” In its catalogs. One of the earliest Rake companies, C.B.& Q. was highly respected and its sale in 1912 to Rock Island added still more offerings to Rock Islands already diverse line.

Hay Loaders

Rock Island laid claim to producing the first hay loaders around 1890, although other patents and companies were appearing on the scene at roughly the same time. The hay loader at the time was a revolutionary innovation and would prove very popular.

Elevators

Although Rock Island did sell elevators, they were not a major component of their business. The earliest mention so far of them is in the 1913 catalog on the back page listed as “write for brochure”. Below is an example of later brochures. Earlier ads indicated Rock Island was acting as a distributor for “Iron Giant” elevators, primary through their eastern branch house, and it seems likely they sold them later as a rebranded version under the Rock Island Name. later on, in the 1931 catalog, Kewanee elevators were listed.
